No, Maui Kamaole is a low-density, low-rise Kihei vacation rental resort, more like a townhouse development than a multi-story condo development. In the Maui Kamaole resort, all the buildings are low rise and arranged in small clusters with beautiful landscaped areas between. The result is a very quiet, peaceful and private tropical Hawaiian setting.

We purchased our 2 bedroom Maui Kamaole condo home in March 1999 and our 1 bedroom condo in August 2001 after spending a lot of time comparing Maui Kamaole to many of the other south Maui condo resorts - Kamaole Sands, Maui Banyan, Hale Kamaole, Kihei Akahi, Maui Parkshore, Menehune Shores, Kihei Surfside, Mana Kai and several others. While nice, many of these other Maui condos are multi-story condo buildings with several other floors of units above and below you.
 
At Maui Kamaole, the buildings are spaced apart with only 2 levels of units. All 1 BR condos are on the ground floor and all 2 BR condos are on the second floor with no other units above. Maui Kamaole has a very non-crowded, quiet, peaceful feeling compared to the more crowded, and noisy setup of some of the other Maui condo rental resorts.

Maui Kamaole is a very quiet, peaceful Hawaiian vacation resort. Our building is set back a long way from the road, and there is no road noise. That was one of the main advantages that we liked about the development when we were looking ourselves. Also as of April 2001, construction of all the new buildings at the back of Maui Kamaole has been completed, so the noise and mess from that development is over.

The parking at Maui Kamaole is very convenient, and there are no parking ramps like some of the other condo developments. Each building cluster has it's own parking area located close to the entrance of the units. As our Maui vacation condo rental guests, you will park in our own assigned parking spot for each condo very close to the entrance of our Maui condos. Look for the number of your assigned parking spot in the check-in information we will send you after full payment is received.

Maui Kamaole is at the far southern end of Kihei about 2-3 blocks from the northern part of Wailea. Wailea is a beautiful planned development with wonderful Hawaiian-style landscaped streets, luxury beachfront homes, and a number of great beaches, golf courses, restaurants and high end five star hotel resorts such as the Four Seasons, Fairmont Kea Lani, Renaissance Wailea, Grand Wailea, etc.
 
Because of the beautiful tropical landscaping and spacious, peaceful layout of Maui Kamaole, it is often said to appear more like properties in Wailea, than in Kihei. Wailea is a beautiful area, but in terms of shopping, restaurants, and other reasonable priced services for families and value conscious consumers, Kihei is great. With it's location at the southern end of Kihei, near the northern edge of Wailea, Maui Kamaole offers the best of both locations. As many visitors like to say Maui Kamaole has the luxury of Wailea at the value prices of Kihei.
 
Makena, another great Maui location with beautiful championship golf courses, and the popular Big and Little Beaches, is just south of Wailea, about 10 minutes drive from Maui Kamaole.

Maui Kamaole is located across South Kihei road from the southern part of Kamaole III Beach Park. From our condo it's about at 4 minute walk down the paved path to South Kihei Road and Kamaole III Beach and Park. Kam III is a very popular South Maui beach with good swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding, sunset watching, etc. Kam III also has a large grassy area with shade and picnic tables. A few blocks further north along South Kihei Road, are Kam I and Kam II, two other great Maui beaches in South Kihei.
 
In addition about 2 blocks further south down S. Kihei road is access to Keawakapu Beach. Because Keawakapu is not visible from the road, it is an especially nice beach because it's usually less crowded than many other Maui beaches. Keawakapu Beach stretches for several miles southward joining up with many of the other great Wailea beaches. A long walk down the beach offers not only beautiful views of the ocean, Maui coastline and other Hawaiian islands, but also nice views of many multi-million dollar Maui beachfront mansions.
 
The closest public access to Keawakapu beach is through the Mana Kai hotel parking lot. There is also a public parking lot there at the back of the Mana Kai lot and at a parking lot immediately south of the Mana Kai resort, so you can choose to either walk or drive. While at Keawakapu you can walk for miles down the beach as it stretches through Wailea and joins up with other Wailea beaches, such as Ulua and Mokapu.

Late flight arrivals and check-ins are not a problem. After we receive your final condo payment, we will mail you lock box and driving instructions to our Maui condo. After arriving at Maui Kamaole, follow the instructions and park in your reserved parking place near our condo. Then follow the instructions for opening the lock box on our condo door. The next morning when the front desk by the main pool is open, please register at the desk and pick up your parking permit.

Check-in time is 3PM and the checkout is 11AM.

Normally an early check-in and late check-out are not possible, because the maids are extremely busy getting our condos cleaned and ready for the next guests.
 
You are welcome to use the facilities at Maui Kamaole on your arrival day prior to check-in time or on your departure day after check-out.
 
If you have any evening flight departure like many of our guests, ask us about our evening departure option that we're sometimes able to offer.
 

 

After receiving your final payment, we will mail you driving instructions to our condo. Also we've listed driving instructions below. (The drive from the main airport in Kahului to Maui Kamaole is about 30 minutes. All mileage figures below are approximate.)  
 

• - Exiting Kahului Airport you will be on Highway 380
• - Follow 380 for several blocks through downtown Kahului
• - Watch for signs to Kihei and turn left onto Puunene Avenue ( Highway 350/311)
• - Follow 350/311 across the valley to the south west side of the island (roughly 10 miles)
• - At the traffic light turn left onto Highway 31 (Pi'ilani Highway)
• The sign at intersection will say Kihei straight ahead, and Wailea to the left. However, the fastest route is normally to take the highway since Maui Kamaole is at the southern end of Kihei. If you prefer a slower, more scenic route along the ocean that gives you a tour of Kihei, you can go straight at this intersection, turn left on S. Kihei Rd and follow it all the way to Maui Kamaole at 2777 S. Kihei
• - Taking Pi'ilani Highway, drive south about 6 miles on 31
• - Turn right onto Kilohana Drive (Wailea sign).
• - At the bottom of the hill, make a right (north) onto S. Kihei Road.
• - Maui Kamaole is located about 2 blocks north on the right side at 2777 S.Kihei Road in Kihei
• (The sign into Maui Kamaole is a brass sign that is sometimes hard to read. The development immediately to the south of Maui Kamaole is Maui Hill, and the developments immediately to the north are Hale Kamaole (similar name, but different development), followed by Kamaole Sands.)

 

Our condos have been newly furnished from top to bottom and are considered among the premium units at Maui Kamaole. The effort and expense we've put into our units reflects the fact that they are our Maui vacation condo home that we share with other guests, and not just Maui condo rental property. To get an idea of how our condos are furnished, please refer to the many pictures of the inside of our condos on our web site. In addition, we continue to make significant upgrades to both our 1 and 2 bedroom Maui condos.

Our normal maximum occupancy for our two bedroom condo is four people. The upstairs master bedroom has a king size bed and the downstairs bedroom has 2 extra-long twins that can accommodate two singles or be pushed together to simulate a single king size bed for a second couple. If you have five or six in your party, please contact us and we can see if we can make alternate arrangements for you.
 
Our normal maximum occupancy for our one bedroom condo is two people. The master bedroom has a king size bed. If you have three or four in your party, please see our 2 bedroom condo or contact us and we'll see if we can make alternate arrangements for you.

A lanai is the Hawaiian term for a balcony or patio. Our two bedroom condo has not just one lanai, but three lanais. The lanai off of the living room is large and private and is equipped with a patio table, 4 rocker-chairs, and chaise lounge. Both our upper and lower bedrooms also have smaller lanais located off the back of our condo. These lanais both have 2 chairs.
 
Our one bedroom condo has two lanais. The lanai off the living room is large and private and is equipped with a patio table, 4 chairs, and two chaise lounges. The master bedroom also has a small walled-courtyard lanai located off the back of our condo with two chairs.
 
In both of our condos, the sliding glass doors at the front and back of the condo result in great cross ventilation that eliminates the need for air-conditioning on all but the very hottest summer days.

Yes, both our condos are non-smoking units and we ask our guests to please respect that policy. This is especially important to us as our daughter has asthma and allergies that are greatly aggravated by smoking odors.
 
The Maui Kamaole association also has house rules that require that guests not smoke on the condo lanais, nor in any of the shared public areas including the swimming pools. The only place on Maui Kamaole property that smoking is permitted is in the parking lots.
 
Please do not smoke inside or our condos or on the condo lanais. Violation of this non-smoking policy will result in your damage deposit be forfeited.

Our 1 bedroom condo is a partial oceanview unit, and our 2 bedroom condo is a pool, garden and mountain view unit.
 
To offer great value to our guests, both of our condos are priced only as garden view units, and as a result have rates lower than the higher priced full ocean view units. The views from both of our condos are very nice. The view from our 2 bedroom condo can be seen from the panoramic picture on our web site and includes a view of the main pool area, as well as palm trees and the nicely landscaped grounds at Maui Kamaole. From the back of our two bedroom condo, there are also mountain views of Haleakala, Maui's dormant volcano which towers up to 10,000 feet.
 
In addition to great views of the beautiful grounds at Maui Kamaole, our one bedroom condo offers a partial ocean view through the palm trees. You can also find a panoramic picture of our 1 bedroom Maui condo view on our web site.

Our condos are very convenient and close to the main pool at Maui Kamaole. This is the pool that you can see from the view on our 2 bedroom front lanai as shown in the panoramic picture on our web site. From our condos it's about a 30 second walk around the side of the building and across the little footbridge to the pool.
 
Maui Kamaole also has a beautiful new second tropical pool area with waterfall that just recently opened. Pictures of it are also shown on our web site. It's set at the back of the Maui Kamaole development, so it's a little further away, but only about a 3 minute walk from our condos.

The Illima Cluster (I building) at Maui Kamaole was built in approx. 1991 as part of Phase III of the Maui Kamaole condo development. We became new owners of our 2 bedroom condo in March 1999, and owners of our 1 bedroom condo in August 2001.
 
Since that time both of our condos have been extensively remodeled, newly furnished and decorated from top to bottom in all rooms including new appliances, beds, bed linens, towels, kitchen utensils, etc. We visit both our condos several times a year and continue to make many improvements and upgrades to each of our condos on every visit.

Our Maui condo homes have a very spacious and open feeling with our 2 BR condo providing 1279 sq. ft. of living space and our 1 BR condo 1061 sq. ft.

We provide several extras and will likely continue to add more each time we vacation there and as other guests leave behind items to share. Right now we provide Hawaiian music CDs, beach towels, beach mats, cooler, iron, and an ironing board.
 
In the kitchen, all pots, pans, dishes, and utensils are provided. You may also find some of the very basic spices such as salt and pepper.

As in most condominium rentals, maid service is provided at check-in and check-out times, but not on a daily basis. If you would like more frequent maid service, we would be glad to arrange it for you for an additional charge. Please contact us for more information.
 

A complimentary starting set of supplies listed below are provided. For a short stay, these may be sufficient. However, for longer stays, guests will likely need to purchase more of some items to meet their personal needs.
 

• 2 rolls of toilet paper per bathroom (one roll installed and one under the sink)
• 2 plastic liners for the wastebasket per bathroom
• 1 small bar of soap for the vanity and one medium bar of soap for the shower, per bathroom
• 1 box of facial tissue per bathroom
• 1 roll of kitchen towels
• 3 trash liners for the kitchen
• 1 small bottle of Palmolive dish soap
• 3 capsules of dishwasher soap (for 3 loads of dishes)
• 1 new scrub sponge

Yes, our condos each have wall A/C units - one in the living room and one in each bedroom. In addition, the living room and each of the bedrooms have ceiling fans. However in general, you rarely need air conditioning in Hawaii, and it is actually much nicer to enjoy the tropical breezes without it as long as you have good ventilation and ceiling fans.
 
One of the many nice things about our condos at Maui Kamaole is that they do have great cross ventilation, with sliding glass doors and windows at the front and back of the unit. This is in contrast to many of the other "high-rise" style developments that have only windows on only one side and no cross-ventilation. At Maui Kamaole you are rarely bothered by the constant drone and noise of air-conditioning units often heard at other developments.
 
As electricity is extremely expensive in Hawaii (about triple US mainland prices), we ask that you help us keep our future rates down by using the air conditioners only when necessary, and please turn them off when you leave the condo for the day. Excessive use of the A/Cs will result in an additional electricity surcharge held from your damage deposit.
 
Also please be aware that in our 2 bedroom condo the living room AC borders the neighbors adjoing bedroom wall. So we ask that you not run this 2 BR living room A/C after 10 PM to avoid disturbing them. You'll find that that most nights in Maui the temperature is very comfortable and A/C is not necessary and it is much nicer without it. However, if necessary there are A/C units in each of the bedrooms.

Yes, there are multiple phones in each condo. Long distance toll calls are blocked on the line, but local calls and 800 or other toll free number will work. The best way to make long distance calls is to to use a phone company calling card toll-free number.

Yes, most likely you will find that your cell phone works just like it would on the U.S. mainland. Even though it is situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, because Hawaii is one of the 50 U.S. states you will likely find that you have normal cell phone coverage and service unless you happen to be off in one of the deserted parts of the island.
 
So if you have a cell phone plan that provides normal coverage when you're travelling to another state, you'll find that you can make and receive calls from family, friends and business on your cell phone just like you would at home. That can always be a fun part of every trip chatting with friends and family in cold weather back home while you're enjoying the tropical sunshine of Maui.

Our kitchens are fully equipped kitchen with most, if not all, of the appliances and utensils you would expect, including refrigerator with automatic icemaker, electric stove with ceramic cooktop, microwave, dishwasher, sink, garbage disposal, toaster, drip coffee maker, and blender. Our condo is also fully equipped with pots, pans, dishes, cups, glasses, silverware, steak knives and many types of miscellaneous kitchen utensils.

Yes, both our condos offer full cable TV coverage with most, if not all, of the channels you are used to watching back home.

Yes, we continue to upgrade the TV sets in both our condos on each of our trips to Maui. Currently in our 2 BR condo we offer a flat screen LCD TV in the living room and in the master bedroom.
 
In our 1 BR condo we currently provide a flat screen LCD TV in the bedroom.

Yes, we do free offer wireless High Speed Internet ( Wi-Fi ) access in both our 1 and 2 bedroom Maui Kamaole condos. Our wireless high-speed internet router is compatible with 802.11b & 802.11g wireless standards, so it should work with most laptops with wireless capabilities.
 
To provide security for your internet connection, our wireless internet access is encrypted, so check the Internet access instructions in the check-in information you receive from us for more information on how you can obtain free high speed wireless internet access during your stay.
 

Yes, our condos have a stereo that plays CDs and cassette tapes. We've also provided several Hawaiian music CDs for our guest's enjoyment.

We understand that you may have concerns making a reservation through the Internet and paying for your reservation prior to your arrival. Please be assured that we have been providing excellent condo accommodations to Maui visitors since 1999 and have hundreds of very satisified former guests many of which vacation with us year after year.

Guests should be aware that our Kihei condos are not childproof for young children, as there are a number of glass table tops, and breakable items at low levels. Also there is a stairway inside of our 2 BR condo leading from the main floor to the upstairs bedroom, and a railing in the loft area overlooking the living room.
 
We welcome families with children in our 2 BR condo, but ask you to please carefully monitor the activities of all young children for their own safety.

The Maui Kamaole registration desk unfortunately is no longer able to book reservations for guest. However, they do offer various activity brochures and can answer general questions and refer you other companies for booking the many great activities that Maui has to offer.

We don't offer any additional special discounts for seniors, airline employees, travel professionals, or any other special group beyond the great value we offer all our guests.
 
However, please consider that our owner discount rates available to everyone are already discounted off standard resort rates and thus are usually better rates than the so called discounted rates being offered through other sources. In addition, booking directly through the owner offers many other advantages, such as knowing exactly which condo you will be renting, see pictures of the condo you will be renting, and asking any general questions you may have.
 

Yes, if our Maui Kamaole condos are unavailable, it's likely we can find availability for you in another Maui Kamaole condo, or in another South Maui condo complex. There are several other owners at Maui Kamaole that rent directly that we would be glad to refer you to. If they're also occupied for your dates, we would be glad to arrange a reservation for you through one of the rental management companies at Maui Kamaole. So even if our condos are booked, send us an e-mail and we'll be glad to make a reservation for you in another condo so you can enjoy your next vacation in sunny, south Maui!
 

Weather in Hawaii is almost always great. Overall the weather remains quite constant year round with average daily highs varying only about 7-8 degrees year round, from low 80's in the winter to upper 80's in the summer.
 
Regarding rain, the biggest factor in Hawaii is not based on when you visit but rather on which side of the island you're on. Because the trade winds blow from the same north-easterly direction about 90+% of the time, the windward northeast side of the island gets the resulting daily rainfall, and the leeward southwest side of the island the dry, sunny weather. Kihei, where our condo is located, lies in the rain shadow of Haleakala and has beautiful sunny weather almost daily except when there are rare Kona winds that blow from the south. The only real reason that winter is high season in Hawaii is not because of the local weather, but because of the visitors winter weather back home.

Kihei has a lot of restaurants that span the full range of food and prices including many very reasonably priced places. This is one big advantage Kihei has over Wailea, where the restaurants are usually high price hotel restaurants.
 
In Kihei at the low end of prices are your typical fast food restaurants - McDonalds, Jack-in-the-Box, KFC, Subway, Taco Bell, etc. There are also many reasonably priced sit down restaurants such as Dennys, Tony Roma's, Pizza Hut, several Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Greek places, a reasonable seafood restaurant and many others. Moving up price a little more there are numerous other high quality local restaurants serving seafood, steaks, salads, etc.
 
Overall prices are somewhat higher than the mainland (perhaps 10 - 20 % more) but prices vary a lot and there are bargains and many early bird dining specials to be found. At the low end, a lot of the fast food restaurants run some of the value menu specials that their mainland counterparts have. The closest sit down family restaurant to our condo is the Denny's which is in a strip mall about 6 - 8 blocks away. In that same mall there is also a Chinese restaurant, a Thai restaurant, a steak/seafood restaurant, and a Greek Bistro. Most of the other restaurants are also along South Kihei road within about 1 - 2 miles of our condo.

For a special night out, albeit more expensive than the above restaurants, here are a couple of our other recommendations.
 
One of our new favorites for a special night out is Nick's Fishmarket at the Fairmont Kea Lani. The setting is nice, the food is great, and the service is absolutely out of this world.
 
Another restaurant with a beautiful setting is the 5 Palms at the Mana Kai. It's set right on the waters edge at Keawakapu Beach. To save money, it's a great place for breakfast and lunch, or from 5 - 6 they have an early bird special for about $20 for salad, main entree and dessert. They also have a children's menus with fairly reasonable rates. Their food is only average, but the beach front setting is absolutely beautiful.
 
Across on the other side of Maui, near Paia, one place every visitor to Maui should try at least once is Mama's Fish House. Although quite expensive, the seafood is absolutely fantastic, the oceanfront setting is beautiful, and the floral arrangements exquisite.

Kihei is home to a new,large Safeway grocery store in the new Piilani Shopping Village along the Piilani Highway in Kihei. You'll pass it on the way from the airport to Maui Kamaole. Just keep a eye on the right hand side after you arrive in Kihei. In addition, Kihei has a couple of medium size grocery stores (Foodland and Star Market) along South Kihei Road. Make sure to ask if the stores have a frequent shopper card to receive additional discounts.
 
Expect grocery prices to be higher than the mainland, especially for some staples such as bread and milk and other items that must be imported from the mainland. In addition to the grocery stores, within walking distance there is a small general store located at the Mana Kai hotel about 2 blocks south of Maui Kamaole if you're just looking for a few basic items.

In general almost any service you might need - restaurants, shops, movie theater, video rentals, groceries, post office, urgent care clinics, pharmacy, dive shops, tour excursions, scuba/snorkel rentals, hardware store, etc. - can be found somewhere along South Kihei road within a few miles or our condo. Anything you can't find in Kihei, which is probably very little, should be available in Kahului or Wailuku near the airport.
 

Because there are so many great activities to do all over Maui, renting a car is usually recommended unless you're content to stay close to home at the pools or nearby beaches during your entire stay. You'll find almost all of the major rental car agencies at the main airport in Kahului. We recommend shopping the internet for the best price deals or going with your normal company of choice.
 

We personally have never had a problem with any theft from our car or condos in Maui, however there are certainly some problems that do occur. As signs around say, "There are thieves in paradise.", so caution is always in order. In particular never leave items of value in open sight in a parked car, especially if you're out in remote areas of the island. Also don't wait until you get to your destination to move valuables into the trunk, as someone may be watching.
 
Inside of our condo, we do offer free usage of a small safe for locking away your laptop PC or other valuables. When leaving our condo, please make sure to lock the front door, as well as the sliding glass doors. Also when sleeping, it's fine to leave windows open, but we recommend closing and locking all the sliding glass doors except for the one on the upper master bedroom level of our 2 BR condo.

For beach equipment there are a lot of places in Kihei that rent masks, snorkels, boogie boards, etc. One is Snorkel Bob's which has several locations in Kihei. You can also find them on the Internet at www.snorkelbob.com There is also another place we've used called Auntie Snorkels. For snorkel or dive equipment you can also rent gear from Maui Dive Shop which has several locations in Kihei.
 

As they say any day at the beach is better than a day at work, but there are some weather patterns that are fairly constant that you should be aware of. The mornings are usually very calm with very little wind and few waves. Mornings are the best time to do any snorkelling or scuba diving, or to go to the beach if you dislike waves or wind.
 
In the afternoons, the Hawaiian trade winds usually pick up and can be fairly strong at times especially in the summer. Depending on your interests, afternoons can also be a good time to go to the beach if you enjoy boogie boarding or body surfing on the waves, which are very popular activities.

Diving is great in Maui, and the most popular dive shop with many different locations is Maui Dive Shop. You can find their web site at www.mauidiveshop.com . Or if you prefer a smaller family run dive shop, we can also recommend Maui Dreams Dive Company at http://www.mauidreamsdiveco.com
 
Over our time in Maui our whole family has gotten heavily involved in scuba diving. Our children and I have earned our Advanced Open Water Scuba certification and Lynn has surpassed all of us by going on to get her professional Dive Master certification. Most of our PADI certification work has been through Maui Dive Shop at their main outlet store in Kihei.
 
For information on where to dive, you should request the free Maui dive site guide offered by Maui Dive Shop. It has a lot of good information on dive site recommendations including a number that are accessible from shore. For boat dives, our favorites have been Molokini Island, and the cathedrals at Lanai. For an easy, very nice shore dive you should try the Ahihi Marine Preserve which is nearby in South Maui. Ahihi is also a great place for easy snorkeling with a large number of tropical fish.

In general prices in Hawaii are somewhat higher than the US mainland, mainly because of extra transportation costs for shipping goods to Hawaii. The figures we've have heard are that the overall cost of living in Hawaii is at least 20% higher than the mainland. However, this varies quite a bit depending on the items. For example, gasoline in Maui is about $1 / gallon higher than the mainland, and some grocery items will be more expensive.
 
The shopping in Kihei, consists mainly of tourist oriented stores such as T-shirt shops, Hawaiian Aloha shirts, swimsuits, souvenirs, etc. For a better selection on more normal items and the best prices on the island, back in Kahului and Wailuku (not too far from the airport) there are several fairly large shopping malls with many of the major US retailers there, e.g., J.C. Penney, Sears, and Macys. If you're shopping for clothes its probably worth at least one trip into town to these malls. The largest mall is called the Ka'ahumanu Center.
  The new Hilo Hatties at the Safeway shopping center in Kihei is also worth at least one trip for Hawaiian style clothing (Aloha shirts, MuMus, et.) and other souvenirs, although you can sometimes find better prices elsewhere. The award-winning Wailea Golf Club is one of the largest and most acclaimed golf facilities in Hawaii. It features three championship courses, two full-service pro shops and the finest outdoor training facility in the Pacific.
 
The Wailea Gold Course (Wailea's Rugged Beauty) is the most challenging of Wailea's trio. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., it has been ranked among the country's best new courses by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, and one of the world's best designed by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler. Jones flavored the Gold with elements of classic golf course design, then finished it with a rugged, natural look. Throughout the course are stark lava rock outcroppings, indigenous Hawaiian grasses, an abundance of kiawe (a relative of mesquite), and remnants of papohaku, prehistoric lava rock walls built by early Hawaiians and preserved for their historic value. The Gold's 200 foot elevation change from top to bottom enhances the numerous ocean and mountain vistas available from virtually every hole. The course has been labeled a "thinking player's" course because it demands strategy and careful club selection to be played well.
 
The Wailea Emerald Course (Wailea's Tropical Playground) is rated one of the best new courses by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, as well as one of North America's most women-friendly by Golf for Women. The Wailea Emerald is akin to a lush tropical playground. Flowers bloom in great abundance: plumeria, bird of paradise, allamanda, gazenia, bougainvillea, beach morning glory, "firecracker" plants and more. But don't be fooled by the Emerald's pleasant appearance. It is a superbly designed course created for pure golf enjoyment, regardless of one's handicap. Measuring 6,825 yards from the back,the Emerald features four to six tee boxes on every hole, allowing players to tailor the course to their playing level. Notable features include a large double green shared by holes #10 and #17. Fronting the green is the only lake on the course. This is perhaps one of the Emerald's more picturesque spots.
 
The Wailea Blue Course (the Grand Lady of Wailea) is the first course ever built in Wailea. The stately Blue is a gracious resort course that has been ranked among America's best resort courses by Golf Digest. In its lifetime, it has hosted such prestigious events as the LPGA Women's Kemper Open and Japan's Asahi-Kyosen pro/celebrity golf tournament. The Blue's fairways offer views of the ocean and Mt. Haleakala, and some of Wailea's stunning residential communities. It features several fountains and lakes, and an abundance of colorful hibiscus, wiliwili trees, bougainvillea and plumeria. The Blue was designed to appeal to a broad range of players. While it has challenged some of the finest professional players in the world, it also offers a measure of forgiveness in its wider fairways and large greens. Like its sister courses, the worst hazards on the blue are the visual ones: the sapphire Pacific Ocean (where one can spot humpback whales during the winter months), several offshore islands, a volcanic cinder cone known as Pu'u Olai and majestic Mount Haleakala.
